Some like'em long! Some like'em short!

Vintage clothing and vintage fashion are a HOT topic and is increasing every day!  Some fashionistas have loved and collected vintage for decades, while some are just becoming aware of the entire vintage scene.  There is a lot of talk on styles and eras of vintage.  Some people like a garment just the way it is and some add accessories in order to "style" it.  Recently a great customer of mine notified me on how she took a 70's maxi dress and shortened it to a tea length to fit her style.

As you can see in the picture above, the skirt part of the dress was cut at the waist and re-sewn to shorten the length of the dress.  As you can see from the picture the dress still has the gorgeous floral on the bottom of the skirt and not compromising the design in the print.

From time to time I will have fashion designers from New York, Chicago, California or other parts of the world that will contact me about a dress that I have in-stock.  These experienced designers are purchasing vintage dresses to use as sewing patterns for their new ideas of fashion!

Now for the disclosure on this whole topic of this blog, I am not advocating taking every piece of vintage clothing and reconstructing it.  This note today is to simply show how this particular dress looks before and after!

P.S. Do you like'em long or short?

Is it Vintage? How to Identify Vintage Clothes

The phone rings it is a typical day in the office, the caller on the other end, "Mam, can you please tell me if this is vintage or not?"  Another scenario, checking incoming emails, yet another person wanting to know if "Grandma's stuff in her closet is vintage or not and what is it worth?"  Then there is the locals that come into our store, well "I found this and can you tell me is this vintage?"  Seems to be the never ending question for my business and that is okay!

So let's have a vintage clothes 101 lesson on how to identify vintage clothing.

First let me be honest, just because it is old, simply doesn't mean that it is a desirable garment!  Sorry hate to be the one to break the bad news but we have all had to learn that truthful statement.

Here is a guideline to help you on how to identify vintage clothing

Vintage Graphic Art Design with a Modern Twist

Owning your own local business has it's advantages and it's disadvantages, today we are going to talk about the bonuses!  Simply getting to know your customers.  That is one thing that my husband, Ben and I, enjoy we try to just be ourselves, friendly and get to know our customers.  We meet new people everyday and we enjoy it.  Owning a vintage and consignment store in a college town we meet tons of students, some only for a one time visit and some come back on a regular basis and stand out in our minds from the crowd.  Today I want to introduce a customer to you, Angela B.  There are a few things I have learned about Angela, shes loves vintage fashion, she has incredible design skills and she is always smiling.  I asked Angela to share her story with you:

BIOGRAPHY

Angela was born in Pensacola, Florida in 1988. Growing up, her family lived in several places throughout the country including Louisiana, Kentucky, Texas, and Alabama. She went to college at Auburn University and graduated in 2010 with a BFA in Graphic Design. Though design was her main focus, she took a great interest in art and photography as well. After college, she moved to Frankfort, Illinois for several months, then to Pensacola, FL and finally settled in Atlanta, GA in 2012. While searching for a full time career at a design firm, she has been serving as a freelance designer. She has a passion for what she does, and looks at each new project as a creative challenge.

Angela started her freelancing identity, "A Boroden Design" after graduating from Auburn in 2010. She has done work for a variety of clients, from lawyers to local bands. Aesthetically, she prefers bold, simple and playful— blending modern and vintage elements. The typical design process begins by getting to know the client and asking questions about the design. Then the client is presented with several concepts, which are fine tuned and finally emailed in their finished form. Her portfolio can be viewed on her website Aboroden

MESSAGE FROM THE DESIGNER

Hi, my name is Angela Boroden. I'm a 23 year old graphic designer. I have always enjoyed being creative—perhaps a result of being told so much to use my imagination as a kid! One of the many things I used to do was create menus for our play-food. When one day my dad told me I could have a career doing it, I think then my mind was made up! I am one of those anomalies that stuck to my degree the whole four years (though not to say there weren't times when I felt like giving up!) and I'm glad I did. I have a real passion for what I do, and look at each new project as a challenge to my creativity.

What else is there to say about me? Well, I like to read, mostly classic literature. My favorite books are the "Out of the Silent Planet" trilogy by C.S. Lewis. I have a blog, "Formerly Modern," which isn't confined just to design, but to everything vintage that I come across including clothing, finds, and random projects I have going on. In my spare time, I put together puzzles, learn to sew and knit, visit antique shops, and try random recipes with my friends. But a lot of my time is spent either working or designing—so I'm glad I enjoy what I do!

Oh and I want to give a huge thanks to Sydney for featuring me on her blog! It's so rare to find down-to-earth and friendly shop owners like her and her husband, and it's always a pleasure visiting their consignment and vintage store in Auburn!

SAMPLES OF ANGELA'S TALENT

Ad - This magazine ad was created as a school project. I traced the illustrations from fashion books made in the 1950s.  (notice the name of the shop in fine print, I wonder who she was thinking of?!)

Blog - For my blog, I created the title and background images. The embellishments on the title are drawn by hand, and the background was created by layering several textures.

Diner - I made up this company, the "Intergalactic Diner" as my senior project in college. I had to design several different elements including the ones shown here (the label for a napkin dispenser and the menu) as well as buttons, coasters, kids menus, postcards, signage, and t-shirts. The illustrations were inspired by children's books from the 1950s and space race era.

Logo - An example of how I like to blend modern and traditional elements. This design is for a woman who performs spa treatments from her home. She wanted to portray the care and comfort of the experience through the design.

Website - This is a unique website design I did for a filmmaker. You get to experience the site almost as though it were on the screen of the camera. The hand and camera itself belong to the actual filmmaker.

As you can see from just a few samples of Angela's work, there is tremendous design talent.  Contact her today and put her talent to work for you!

Be Unique, Wear Vintage Clothing! It is fashion insurance!

Customers from around the globe often ask, what does your Auburn, AL store location like?  What does the inside decor look like?  I have posted pictures in previous posts and on our Auburn Customers welcome page, but sometimes pictures just doesn't do the store justice! The video that you are about to view was taken by an Auburn University student, Sara Jane Little.

Find more videos like this on The Loveliest Village

Although this was our first store location, and we have moved this is our humble beginnings.  You can view the retro paint on the walls, gorgeous vintage dresses, vintage costume jewelry and hats galore!  Meet Ben, Sydney's husband who operates the local store.  As he loves to share with the customers, "Buying vintage clothing is fashion insurance! You are almost guaranteed not to dress like someone else at the same event!"

At Sydney's Auburn store you will find every day clothing, vintage 50's through the 80's, and you will also find costume rentals.

In our current location, 169. S. Gay Street in downtown Auburn, across from Burger King, we carry modern clothing with a touch of classic vintage.  Although due to public demand you might just start seeing more vintage again in our local store!
